Pirouettes

by Anneliese M. Kvamme

I
  felt
    a raindrop
     on my head.
    Looked up,
        one fell
        in my eye--
     Laughed, and
        four fell in my mouth
    Then,
     Alternately running
         and skipping, I pirouetted
             down the leaf-strewn pathway,
     spreading my fingers to catch
all the glory of the rain and
     Laughing to the sky--
A wild whirl, and sudden stop--
      An executive hurried by with
        a large,
          black
          umbrella
A drop fell on my matted hair;
a shiver coursed down my back
as my arms drew my coat
   more closely
     and my feet turned
       reluctantly homeward.
